Why do the available voices differ between devices?

Because they come from your operating system, not from us. macOS, Windows, Android and iOS each ship a different set, and a voice you hear on one machine may not exist on another. Some browsers also load additional voices only after the page has been open a moment.

Can I download the audio as a file?

Not from the browser's speech API — it plays to your speakers and exposes no recording hook. Saving the output requires a server-side speech service, which would mean sending your text somewhere.

Is my text sent to a speech service?

No. SpeechSynthesis uses the voices installed on your own device, so the text is spoken locally. Note that a few platforms use a cloud voice for certain high-quality options — if that matters to you, pick a voice your OS lists as offline.
