Questions
- Do I actually need a sitemap?
- For a small, well-linked site, no — a crawler will find everything by following links. It matters when pages are deep, newly published, or poorly linked internally. It is also the fastest way to tell Google a batch of new pages exists.
- Does priority affect my rankings?
- No. Google has said publicly that it ignores both priority and changefreq. They express your preference about crawl ordering, nothing more. lastmod is the field that is genuinely used, and only if it is honest — a file that claims everything changed today gets the field discounted.
- How many URLs can one sitemap hold?
- 50,000 URLs or 50MB uncompressed, whichever comes first. Beyond that, split into several sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index file.
